SCAL is the Accredited Training Provider approved by the Ministry of Manpower to conduct Shipyard Safety Instruction Course for Workers – General Trade.


Legal Requirement

The purpose of the course is to enable the learner to possess knowledge and skills to undertake the role of General Worker in the Marine Industry. This course is a mandatory course governed by WSH (Shipbuilding and Ship-repairing) Regulations 2008 reg. 6 (2) which stipulates that “It shall be the of every person not to carry out any hazardous work in a shipyard or on board a ship in a harbour unless he has undergone a safety and health training course approved by the Commissioner for Workplace Safety and Health.”


Learning Objective

  • Understand Legal Obligations in workplace safety and health
  • ·Identify hazards in a shipyard –

o   Prevention of Fires and Explosion, Preventive Measures for Working at Height - falling from height & falling Objects, safe access, chemicals, mechanical, electrical, radiation, material handling, working in confined space.

  • Apply for safety permit prior to hot work
  • Recognize all types of industrial safety signs
  • Take safety precautions when working with different hazards – including the hazards mentioned above and other emerging hazards such as heat stroke, infectious diseases, ergonomics and  etc
  • Evacuate in case of fire or Emergency
  • Put on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and Industrial Safety Signs


Target Audience

The course would be appropriate for:

  • All workers working in the shipbuilding and ship repairing industry
  • All suppliers and manufactures of shipbuilding and ship-repairing products


Assumed Skills and Knowledge

  • Be able to listen, read, speak and write
  • Be able to comply with workplace processes, procedures, activities and practices

Medium of Instruction
Only participants with 100% attendance will be eligible to sit for the assessment. ID card (2 years validity) will be awarded to participants who successfully completed the course and passed the assessment.
A notice of replacement / postponement together with the full particulars of the new participant (replacement) must be given to us AT LEAST 3 working days before course commencement. A charge of S$50 (replacement) or S$100 (postponement) will be imposed on such changes.
